The R´s of Sustainable Fashion

A Framework for a Better Future

By Pamela Vanessa Meixueiro Aguilar

The fashion industry is currently seeing a period of fast cycles, high turnover and constant novelty. Thankfully,  the sustainable fashion movement offers a counterbalance with a simple guideline and a transformative framework: the R’s of sustainable fashion. These principles introduce a new perspective on how clothing is designed, produced, consumed and valued, taking into consideration the environmental and social responsibility of reducing negative impacts. It is not a path towards perfection, it’s a journey of progress led by intention, action and collaboration.

It´s important for everyone to reflect on these ideas and contribute, with small everyday choices, to build a more conscious fashion system.

Reduce

Buy less, choose better.

Take a look at your buying habits. These days, overconsumption has become a trend, when in reality,  limiting your purchases to essential pieces that genuinely add value to your wardrobe should be the norm. Focus on higher-quality garments that will last longer in both construction and style. Ask yourself if you really need to buy a new item. Could you borrow or rent an outfit instead? Slowing down your buying habits not only helps reduce waste but also encourages a more thoughtful relationship with what you wear.

Reuse

Give your clothes more lifecycles.

If a piece of clothing is in good shape, consider reusing it before even thinking of throwing it away. The idea of repeating an outfit can be frowned upon on social media, but it shouldn’t be. Repeating an outfit doesn’t mean using the exact same look, it means experimenting,  restyling and combining it in different ways. This not only extends the life of your pieces but also expands the possibilities within your wardrobe.

Repair

Mend your garments and extend their life.

If your clothes need mending, repair them yourself or take them to someone specialized. It´s easy to stop wearing a piece because of a minor defect, but if it can be fixed and brought back to life, it deserves a second chance. Small fixes can make a big difference. A report by WRAP (UK) found that by extending the life of clothing by just 9 months of active use would reduce carbon, waste and water footprints by around 20-30%.

Recycle

Give textiles a new life.

Some apparel has already given its all and that’s when it’s time to turn them into something new. Most synthetic textiles cannot currently be recycled into new textiles so keeping them out of landfill means finding ways of extending their use. Upcycling fabrics can be a creative.
